Nekisha Durrett’s “Don’t Forget to Remember (Me)”, a commissioned monument at Bryn Mawr College arising from an exploration of exclusionary histories on campus, will be unveiled to the public on April 24th. Durrett’s artwork is the culmination of Bryn Mawr College’s ARCH Project (Art Remediating Campus Histories), a five-year collaboration with students, staff, faculty, and alums, and was produced in partnership with Monument Lab.
“Don’t Forget to Remember (Me)” is a monumental artwork at Bryn Mawr College, created to answer the question, “What stories are missing from Bryn Mawr College?” Installed in the Cloisters of the Old Library—a space once inscribed with the name of former college president M. Carey Thomas, known for her racist and exclusionary views—the work centers on themes of reclamation, healing, and belonging. The design features a woven paver pathway that forms a “square knot,” symbolizing unbreakable connection and the commitment to honor all of Bryn Mawr’s histories. Engraved into custom pavers, the names of Black servants from early 1900s college records reflect those often hidden contributions. These pavers, glazed with soil from Perry House (a Black cultural center established in 1972 following student protests, which was razed in 2013), root the piece in the ongoing legacies of resistance and inclusion.
